Day 5 - Arrival in Daegu

Oops - starting to fall behind schedule already.  This trip is proving to be quite exhausting, and we've only just started.  It's still very hot and humid, which is apparently very unusual.  The Koreans we spoke to say the climate appears to be changing here also, becoming more tropical with longer summers.  However, when it does rain, it is really welcome and refreshing.

We left our cosy little hotel in Jeonju in the morning and took a taxi to the express bus station to get a bus to Daegu where the conference is being held. We had considered taking the train, but this would have involved a transfer.  We had to make sure we got to Daegu in time for the conference registration and reception, so this, we thought (based on our previous experience of negotiating train stations) this might be a bit fraught. In  the end, we decided it was just easier to go the whole distance on the bus, although this would take about 3 hours.  We shouldn't have worried as the air-conditioned coach was superb.  The seats were lovely and wide with plenty of leg room and could be pushed back for a comfortable snooze.  The views of the countryside and wooded mountains were wonderful as we climbed up through some mountain passes.  The on board entertainment on the video screens was incomprehensible but still very entertaining.

We had a short stop half way through the journey.  As we clambered off the bus to find more water, we were approached by someone who identified Elwyn as a probable participant at the ICE conference.  This gentleman was a South Korean scientist living in the USA and kindly sorted out a taxi for us to the Hotel Inter-Burgo when we did, finally arrive in Daegu.

The hotel, is I have to say, quite splendid - absolutley huge with marble staircases and enourmous chandeliers!  A huge difference from our little hotel in Jeonju.

The interactive TV screen in bedroom displays personalised messages but also plays a really annoying tune continuously.
Clicking on the different icons gives information about the different facilities in the hotel - like the 6 different types of restaurant, as well as TV and movies to choose from.

This is one of the beautiful chandeliers in the hotel lobby

This looks like a Christmas tree but is a huge chandelier that reaches from the ceiling on one floor, down to the ground on the floor below.

Elwyn preparing his talk in the hotel lounge, which is enourmous

This is part of the lounge, showing a huge organ at one end.  A lady plays this every morning at breakfast time!

Along another wall of the same lounge an area for live music.

This is another side of the same lounge
